5-month-old kidnapped, returned on realising that it's a girl

SURAT: A 40 year old woman was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a five month old child from Surat bus station. The accused kidnapped the child as she had no child even after 20 years of marriage. On realising that the kidnapped child is a girl she brought her to police and claimed that she found her at railway station.

Police arrested Jyotsana Rathod, 40, for allegedly kidnapping Fatema Shaikh from Surat central bus station. Munur Shaikh and Asiyabibi, parents of Fatema, came to Surat to visit the city during Ramzan from Mahemdavad of Kheda district. After visiting the city they went to central bus stand to catch return bus for home.

The bus was late and the family had to wait at the bus station. While waiting the couple slept as they were tired. At around 4 am Asiyabibi realised that Fatema is missing. The family searched for the child at nearby locations but failed. They informed police and lodged a complaint of missing. Police checked at railway station and other possible locations but failed to locate Fatema.

Meanwhile, Rathod came to railway police station with the child and informed that she found the child at Bardoli railway station. Out of suspicion police questioned Rathod in detail during which she confessed that she kidnapped the child when the family was sleeping at bus station. She had no child during her 20 year married life and to have a child she kidnapped Fatema.

After kidnapping she took the child to a nearby location and removed her clothes to give her bath. On removing clothes she realised that she kidnapped a girl child. Not willing to have a girl she thought to handover the child to police and created the story to save self.

Kanda an absconder, his key aide arrested

Gurgaon/New Delhi, August 8
Former Haryana Minister of State Gopal Kanda, accused of abetting the suicide of his former employee Geetika Sharma, failed to turn up for police questioning on Wednesday and was declared an absconder. The Delhi Police has arrested his aide and HR manager of the MDLR group, Aruna Chadha.
Kanda was reportedly seen leaving his Gurgaon residence early in the morning after which his whereabouts are unknown. After he failed to report for police questioning, a raiding party went to his farmhouse in Gwal Phari, Gurgaon, but failed to find him. The police is now sending parties to raid various places where he could be found.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North West District) Dr P Karunakarn confirmed Aruna Chadha’s arrest. A charge of abetment to suicide under IPC section 306 was earlier registered against her. Today, she was booked under a fresh charge of IPC section 120B (Punishment of Criminal Conspiracy).
The former minister is said to be evading arrest in a bid to strike an out-of-court compromise with the family of Geetika Sharma.
Through his lawyer, Kanda had sought three more days to prepare his defence. The Delhi Police had rejected Kanda’s request and asked his lawyer to present the former minister before the police.
Geetika’s family alleged that the police were giving Kanda time to wriggle out of the case. “They should have arrested him on Day One itself, but they have been busy questioning us.
The pressure to end our fight is mounting. We are being threatened and even being lured with money, but nothing can replace Geetika,” said the family.
The Delhi Police had for four days not sent a team to Kanda’s Gurgaon residence to question him even once on the ground that the police does not have enough evidence against him. It was only after his disappearance today that the police swung into action and reached his farmhouse.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police has deployed teams to trace Kanda. Plans are afoot to issue a non-bailable arrest warrant against him, police sources said.

Hooda minister booked for suicide of ex-air hostess

Hooda minister booked for suicide of ex-air hostess

Chandigarh/Delhi, August 5
Haryana Minister of State for Home Gopal Kanda was in the dock today after a former woman employee of his now defunct airline MDLR committed suicide accusing him of “mentally harassing” her.
Hours after he was booked by Delhi Police, Kanda offered to quit to facilitate a “fair investigation” and save the Congress-led Bhupinder Singh Hooda government from further embarrassment.
The police said Geetika Sharma in her suicide note blamed Kanda for taking the extreme step.
The Delhi Police registered a case of abetment to suicide under Sections 306 and 34 of the IPC against Kanda and Aruna Chadha, one of his firm managers, on the basis of the suicide note. Geetika, 23, a resident of Ashok Vihar in northwest Delhi, was found hanging at her residence on Sunday morning.
Kanda told The Tribune that he had offered to quit to facilitate a “fair investigation” in the case.
“I am not guilty and I want to get the investigation done quickly. I made the offer to Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda this evening and will send my resignation to Governor Jagannath Pahadia tomorrow,” he said. Earlier in the day, Opposition leaders demanded that Kanda be stripped of his position in view of the allegations.
Police sources said Geetika, who quit Kanda’s company recently, allegedly took the extreme step as she was depressed due to mental harassment by the minister who, she alleged, was pressuring her to rejoin his company. Kanda, however, refuted these allegations and said his name was unnecessarily being linked to the incident. “A case of abetment to suicide has been registered against Kanda and Aruna Chaddha,” said P Karunakaran, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West).
In her suicide note, Geetika had alleged that Kanda was torturing her mentally after she left her job in his company and he was pressuring her to rejoin his firm. “She has written that Kanda and Chadha broke her trust and cheated her which is why she was committing suicide,” Karunakaran said.
Geetika’s cousin Gaurav Sharma alleged that after the airline’s operations were suspended, Kanda offered her another job, but she refused. “Instead, she chose to go to Dubai and joined the Emirates. However, he wrote a letter to that airline indulging in character assassination which led to her termination,” he alleged. Kanda even gave her a BMW, which she returned after using for a few days. Kanda was a frequent visitor at Geetika’s place, he said.
Rubbishing the allegations, Kanda said Geetika was employed as an air hostess in the MDLR Airlines, which he owned. “On becoming senior, she opted for ground duty. However, one day, she suddenly left office. Next we heard that she had taken a job with the Emirates. She came back in about eight months and seemed disturbed. She approached us for a job which we gave because she was a good worker,” Kanda pointed out.
Maintaining that she was erratic in reporting for work, Kanda said she approached him to sponsor her study for an MBA degree, saying she was not keen on working. “We gave her Rs 7.5 lakh and made her chairman of the trust that runs my international school in Sirsa. That was the last I spoke to her. Aruna did, of course, contact her to say that she had taken the money but was not reporting for work. She was urged to come and sign papers pertaining to the school functioning. Her mother spoke to me saying they would return the money. I assured her that I was in no hurry to get it back and asked her to send Geetika to enable clearance of pending papers,” he justified.
Kanda claimed the police had taken out call records that showed he hadn’t spoken to Geetika for over two months. “After that, she neither reported for work nor took any calls,” he said.
Confirming that he and his wife would visit Geetika’s house occasionally, Kanda said, “We were on good terms with her family and would often drop by to meet her parents. Where the question of abetment to suicide has come from is a shocker to me. The truth will come out,” he said.

10% of rural India lives on less than Rs 17 a day: NSSO survey

10% of rural India lives on less than Rs 17 a day: NSSO survey

NEW DELHI: Two decades of economic reforms and drum beating about inclusive growth seem to have failed to change the face of rural India as 10 per cent of the population live on less than Rs 17 a day.
According to a government survey released for 2011-12 on household consumer expenditure, "The poorest 10 per cent of India's rural population had an average monthly per capita expenditure (MPCE) of Rs 503.49 per month."
Their urban counterparts are only slightly better with daily per capita expenditure of Rs 23.40.
As per the National Sample Survey Organisation's (NSSO) 68th round of survey for the period of July 2011 to June 2012, "The poorest 10 per cent of the urban population had an average MPCE of Rs 702.26." The survey, which was conducted two decades after the economic reforms were launched in 1991, is aimed at measuring the living standards of people in the country.
This is in fact much lower than the poverty line of Rs 28.65 per capita daily consumption in cities and Rs 22.42 in rural areas fixed by the Planning Commission for 2009-11 as released in March this year.
In urban areas, it said, 70 per cent of the population live on a daily expenditure of about Rs 43.16. Although the person belonging to the top 20 per cent of population consumes more than Rs 100 a day. As regards the rural areas, the survey said, half of the population was living on a per capita daily expenditure of Rs 34.33. "In rural areas, half of the population belong to households with MPCE below Rs 1,030 and nearly 40 per cent of the rural population had MCPE of below Rs 922," the survey said. The provisional results of the NSS survey are based on sample of 59,070 households in 7,391 villages and 41,602 households in 5,223 urban blocks.
